Depression affects up to half a million people in Ireland, causing untold problems for sufferers and their loved ones. But what if happiness was made in your bowels instead of through your thoughts?
What if choosing to eat the right mood boosting foods was the prescription, instead of being precribed anti-depressants.
It is now clear that there are certain gut bacteria, which inhibit our bowels, can positively influence our mood and behaviour — in other words, WE ARE WHAT WE EAT.
This is all thanks to the research carried out by Ted Dinan, Professor of Psychiatry at UCC, one of the world's main experts on this link between mental health and our gut health.
Research has backed up this theory — in his laboratory Dinan has found that the consumption of certain probiotic bacteria can actually alter the chemistry of the brain. These microbes that chase the blues are called “psychobiotics”.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Ted Dinan to Belfast to present a morning lecture on The Psychobiotic Revolution.
This event will include a curated lunch by The Cultured Club compromised of mood boosting foods so you may alter your gut bacteria to postiviely influence your day.
