FILMFEST x MENAGERIE: 808 — THE HEART OF THE BEAT THAT CHANGED MUSIC
This is a documentary film that will tell the inspiring story of the Roland TR808, from the creation of Planet Rock which established it as a dynamic modern instrument, to how it defined hip hop and modern dance culture, through to its continued use today.
The Roland TR-808 drum machine was intended to give studio musicians a simple tool for making backbeats. Instead, it kickstarted a revolution—one whose story is captured in full by the documentary ‘808’. Beastie Boys flipped the 808’s icy beats in reverse to make ‘Paul Revere’; Shannon’s freestyle pop breakout “Let the Music Play” is propelled by its gently swung kicks and snares; and Africa Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force’s electro classic ‘Planet Rock’ thrives on its throbbing thuds and crisp hi-hats.
Music nerds, especially nerds who are all about the beats, will find satisfaction in 808, the new documentary tribute to the drum machine/rhythm composer that revolutionized popular music.
