February 2018 was the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, a major milestone in the journey of women’s rights. As part of our Hear Her Voice Film Series, watch this riveting documentary on our big screen that reveals the incredible stories of Seven Women of 1916.
Many have heard of the seven men who signed the Proclamation of the Irish Republic in Easter 1916. But we rarely hear about the women who were caught up in the extraordinary events of Easter week. Over two hundred women fought or served with the rebel forces. Despite the fact that many women left vivid and evocative accounts of the conflict, most were forgotten, and some were literally airbrushed out of history. Filmed in Rising-related locations around Dublin, with fascinating archive film and evocative re-enactments using the women’s own testimonies, Seven Women quickly paints a picture of their pivotal role, at a time when women were generally not allowed involvement in most things outside the home.
