♫ ♪ Strange_U (High Focus Records)
Strange U’s enthusiasm for the off key and weird reigns supreme. Stream of consciousness lyrics coupled with hefty left of centre soundscapes are the perfect antidote to today’s bland cough mixture speech impediment rap. Strange U is a collaborative project centred around two Hip Hop veterans- King Kashmere and producer Doctor Zygote (aka The Maghreban).
Live, Strange U love and respect the traditional two turntables and a microphone set up but augment it with triggering samples and mad effects. The sonics are bathed in a wash of dub echo and spring reverb. It's an audio visual assault on the senses that makes for a truly psychedelic experience.
The dynamic duo released their debut album #LP 4080 under UK powerhouse label High Focus Records in February.
♫ ♪ 5th Element
It's been a long time coming but we are delighted to finally be welcoming 5th Element to Belfast. Fresh off the release of their proper LP debut, State of Mind 2.0 (produced by Double Screen), the Ballymun duo of Ger Kellet & Linco are set to unleash their energetic presence upon us with a fresh and varied sound, rich in traditional hip-hop vibes but also delving into electro, garage & drum n bass. The pair are well seasoned on the live scene and have recently made notable performances at Whelans Ones to Watch 2017, LINGO Festival 2016 and Electric Picnic 2016.
♫ ♪ Danny Ryhmez Official
I asked Danny to play for us at some point the day I heard his debut album, Misfit. That should say it all. After hitting the radar of many with his standout performances on Gerry Boy's Tailored Vibes compilation, the up and coming artist under Jambo's Ath Cliath Records really delivered another jewel in the crown of Irish hip-hop and has shown no sign of slowing down since. With new album Tranzitions already coming soon Danny Ryhmez is going to be a name ringing out in the island's music scene for a long time to come.
♫ ♪ Sewer Rats (5th Anniversary show)
Their little red eyes gleaming with rage and hunger. As anyone who had a remote interest in Belfast hip-hop at the time will know, this release raised the bar beyond belief and its effects and influence are still being felt to this day. Helmed by beat wizard and master of the dark, dreary, vintage sound Seaz420 who brought together some of the finest wordsmiths from the city this truly was a landmark release for Irish hip-hop as a whole. Rightly worth a celebration, if you are not yet familiar with the sounds of Dex, Noize Thievery, Reck, Fube, Koncept and more then theres no better time to remedy this with a dose of rat poison.
♫ ♪ Waking Android
After a few highly successful live shows, the new duo featuring dsgrace and Kronus are quickly gathering pace and have people talking ahead of their debut EP release. Kronus, the artist formerly known as Co-Kane has recently made his much anticipated return to the Irish hip-hop scene after a few years absence. Teaming with dsgrace the pair combine their differing yet complimentary styles as they handle both production and rhyme duties and plan to leave a mark with their forthcoming EP as well as their as of yet untitled project that is expected in 2017.
♫ ♪ Arcane Soakes
If not the most exciting prospect in Irish hip-hop today, this kid cannot be far from the title. A small collection of Youtube freestyles had people foaming at the mouth, immediately demanding more from someone who's lyrical density and complex subject matter stretch far beyond his years. As his style matures, so does the growth of anticipation for anything he is working on and he's sure to wow a few unsuspecting crowd members come May 19th.
♫ ♪ Open Mic Session / DJ sets from Militant Vinylist & John King
Our last open mic session WENT OFF. It will take some topping with a few people saying it was the best open mic they had seen. Give us more of the same energy this time round and lets make it even better. Kicking off proceedings will be DJs Militant Vinylist & John King, selecting a fine mix of classic and more recent hip-hop for your enjoyment before the MCs get going.
